TerraVin is a boutique Marlborough winery with a dedicated focus on growing and making exceptional hillside Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
Under the guidance of pioneering viticulturist Mike Eaton, TerraVin draws fruit from three luscious and densely planted sites stretching across the revered Southern Valleys of Marlborough. The hillside vineyards are sensitively handled to produce low yields of superb quality, with winemaker Gordon Ritchie applying his intuitive approach to each parcel of land.
TerraVin has an organic farming approach with biodynamic practices, which tailors the estate's philosophy to tend to the individual needs of each vine. Every grape is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed, while this gentle treatment continues in the winery with indigenous yeasts allowed to take the lead.
Founded in 1999, the TerraVin Hillside Vineyard is situated in the Southern Wither Hills between Marlborough’s Wairau and Awatere Valleys, just inland from the East Coast of the South Island. It was this unique location and that allowed signature vineyards to grow in the fertile soils of the sheltered hillsides.
The estate covers a total of 39 ha predominantly planted with Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, plus a small area of Chardonnay. With distinctive 'micro-sites' through the vineyard, TerraVin is renowned for the range of subtle but unmissable differences in ripe grapes, the characters of which combine in their finished wines to add complexity and depth.
Winemaker Gordon Ritchie believes the hallmarks of a great wine are elegance and balance. His aims are to produce wines which are impressive as a whole rather than having one or two impressive features. The TerraVin philosophy mirrors this, as the estate creates wines that are expressive of the vineyard and area that they come from, as opposed to showing the hand of the winemaker.
